About Us

Celebrating 130 Years and Counting…

On October 29, 1876 a group of German-speaking Protestants formed an Evangelical Congregation in O'Fallon.  After worshipping in other buildings, the congregation dedicated its sanctuary April 20, 1879.

We are a part of the United Church of Christ, a denomination formed in 1957 through the union of the Evangelical and Reformed Church (where our roots are) and the Congregational Christian Churches (which include the Pilgrims of Plymouth Plantation).

As a denomination, we emphasize the significance and freedom of the local congregation.  We offer great diversity of beliefs while maintaining unity in our fellowship.  Our differences add to the richness and strength of our life together.

Our Denomination

The United Church of Christ, though formed only in 1957, has roots that make it one of the oldest denominations in American Protestantism—it is a union of the Congregational Christian and Evangelical and Reformed churches of the United States. The Congregational and Christian churches had merged in 1931, with origins dating back to the earliest American communities. The Reformed Church in the U.S. and the Evangelical Synod of North America had merged in 1934, with history dating back equally as far. The UCC’s 1.5 million members, descended largely from Pilgrims, Puritans and German settlers, belong mostly to traditions begun by the 16th century reformers of Europe and England. They belong to some 6,200 congregations across the nation.

As a local congregation we are . . .

· Small enough to be a family where you are not lost in the crowd

· Large enough to have a vital ministry and a vigorous program

· Independent enough to be self-governing, owned and operated by the
membership

· Connected enough to be part of a denomination in the mainstream of
the Christian community worldwide

· Conservative enough to be lovingly evangelical, but liberal enough to
 require no creedal tests

· Inclusive enough so that people of all backgrounds, races and circumstances feel at home with each other

What we do . . .
